soc HW #2

here goes round # 2, with deductive and inductive logic.  i love making gross generalizations about society...

DEDUCTIVE LOGIC

Topic of interest:  Fidelity in marriage

Why are some people loyal in relationships while others have few qualms about cheating on their partners?

My theory will address married American women

Women who work in a highly competitive field need to feel that they can rely on their life partners for support.  The work force is not a friendly place for women, especially if they are trying to reach the upper echelon.  They would be wary of involving themselves in scandal of any kind because they are worried about losing their jobs and/or the respect of their peers.  These women would also not easily trust other people, making it less likely that they would open themselves up in any way to someone outside of the marriage.  A highly competitive field would be one where people are continually angling for promotions, there are constant employee reviews and there are more people looking for jobs than are available.  People compete to land accounts or commissions for higher wages, benefits, and eventual promotion.

Work in a highly competitive field (Yes, No)

Have cheated on spouse (Yes, No)

Hypothesis: Women who work in highly competitive fields are less likely to cheat on their husbands than women who work in less competitive fields.

INDUCTIVE LOGIC

Students who are more socially active are more likely to get good grades.

Socially active students have a built-in network of study partners, which makes them more inclined to study in groups, which helps with academic performance.  They have more impetus to succeed because they can compare their record against their friends’ records.  They are fulfilled socially and therefore more likely and more capable of attempting fulfillment on an academic level.  The more a person succeeds socially, the more they will want success in academics as well.

The more a person succeeds in one area of life, the more they will be driven to match that success in other areas as well.

what do you think?

I think that all your logic is good, except, there is more cheating on spouses when the spouses are NOT supportive in all areas of life and/or abusive (verbally or physically). There are a lot of successful women in all fields who are very fulfilled but cheat on their spouses because at home they are treated like crap. It's easier to cheat - where someone else makes you feel like a queen - than fix what's going on at home. Work is great and just too time consuming, so cheating is the easy way out.
